A FINE GAEL TD is set to introduce a bill aimed at removing some barriers to the installation of CCTV cameras in Dublin.
The proposed legislation aims to build on the existing powers of local authorities to install cameras in locations with high levels of illegal dumping.
James Geoghegan TD said the bill would make it easier for councils to install cameras in areas with a “high prevalence of crime and repeated crime”.
Speaking to Newstalk Breakfast, Geoghegan said the local guardian of Sean Moore Park in Dublin 4 has been calling for CCTV to help deter vandals.

He said there is a “great demand in local communities” for more cameras in their areas.
Geoghegan added that garda investigations could also benefit from increased surveillance: “They’re not getting the investment from the top brass to install CCTV in the areas that are needed.”
He also said that civil liberties would be protected by a new public code.
“What is made absolutely clear in the consultation on that code is that it will be fully compliant with data protection measures,” he said.
So, we want to hear your thoughts on the bill.
